Project Fatigue

Project Fatigue

Most adults experience temporary fatigue in their lifetime. Such instances of temporary fatigue usually have an identifiable cause and a likely remedy. Chronic fatigue, on the other hand, lasts longer, is more profound and isn't relieved by rest. It significantly impairs quality of life and ability to do, most things the rest of us take for granted..

Chronic fatigue may be caused by an array of factors, often in combination. Factors include disease, sleep problems, lifestyle and mental challenges. Even modest improvements in effectiveness of fatigue management methods will have life-changing effect for sufferers and economic impact for corporations. Workers with fatigue cost US employers $136.4 billion annually in health-related LPT **.

Project Fatigue will collect and analyse physiological data to understand metrics associated with fatigue. Based on the findings, the project will propose methods for combating personal and corporate fatigue.

Individual fatigue will be measured with a combination of symptom registration and physical activity as measured with Garmin devices.

Garmin users all over the world is invited to take part in the project.

Project Fatigue is a research project involving researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Garmin Nordic Health Team and Overskudd.

Research design, in short

  • 100 sufferers of fatigue will undergo Overskudd interventions to get better. The users will be new Overskudd clients with fatigue who want to participate in the project. The users will be recruited online and through Overskudd partners. The users will pay for services rendered.

  • Data from the users will be collected over 12-24 months, see “Project timeline” below, for details.

  • Up to 10 000 Garmin users from selected countries are invited as a reference group.

Requirements for participation in the Garmin reference group

  • Age: 18-70

  • Fatigue for at least 24 months

  • Minimum 40% loss of physical and/or mental capacity from fatigue

Why participate

  • Participation is free

  • Data collection is automatic, with qualified Garmin devices

  • Substantial credits on Overskudd services and Garmin devices

  • Contributing to improved quality of life for fatigue sufferers all over the world

How to participate

  • Register as an Overskudd user in the Overskudd app (iPhone or Android)

  • Fill out the project form

  • Your application and your fulfillment of requirements will be verified by email.

  • If qualified, you will receive detailed instructions for participation by email

  • Support will be available to guide your participation

What to do

If your application is approved, these are your steps:

  1. Follow the instructions in the approval email from Overskudd to sign into your Overskudd account at overskudd.com

  2. Set up streaming with your qualified Garmin device or get a new device at a Project Fatigue discount here: overskudd.no/Garmin

  3. Wear your device and register symptoms in the Overskudd app daily for 12 months

Credits and discounts

Credits are awarded for each participant who are registering sufficient data to be part of the reference group. Credits are awarded to participants who register symptoms at least 20 days pr month, every consecutive month in a project period.

Credits toward future service are awarded with USD 5 pr day for completed symptom forms. Credits will amount to USD 1 200-1 825, depending on number of days completed. The credit can be applied like this:

Overskudd Now Team Support

  • Overskudd Now team support is an annual subscription with support from (recovered) users. The service will be available from 2023, at USD 1500 (to be determined) pr year. The subscription consists of:

  • One year of Overskudd Analysis access (expanded to two years for project participants) with automated and (recovered) user support.

  • A complimentary Garmin Vivoactive X or equivalent

  • 20% discount on Overskudd services and Garmin devices, up to USD 1000 pr user.

The project is carried out in two steps:

Data acquisition and research

Overskudd is fully responsible for the data acquisition. This is the initial 12 months of the project. NTNU has no role in this and should not have any role in the data acquisition.

In the next step data will be transferred to NTNU for research purposes. The research will be objective and independent. We are working on the research plan. Tord Asle Gjerdalen, medical doctor and cross country skier, plans to complete a PhD as part of the project.

Garmin

Garmin designs, manufactures and ships wearable technology worldwide. Garmin Health devices provides health metrics and real-time sensor streams that can be further analysed by partners.

Overskudd

Overskudd Analytics shows how micro activities correlate with changes in the nervous system. We use sensor data with human and computer intelligence to guide users to a better future, whether the outcome is getting out of bed or winning Olympic medals. Overskudd’s hybrid (human and machine) approach to understanding facilitates better health, performance and quality of life for athletes, patients and employees.

Leaders, employees, students, patients, athletes and researchers worldwide use Overskudd.

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

NTNU is specialized in technology and the natural sciences and has professional degree programs in medicine, psychology. NTNU has cooperative agreements with 60 universities worldwide. More than 40 000 students are enrolled at NTNU.
