Respiration rate
It is common to have a resting respiratory rate of between 11 and 14 breaths per minute. Calm breathing is healthy. When we are stressed or sick, respiratory rate increases.
We can breathe consciously or unconsciously. By breathing more calmly, deeply and rhythmically, we can soothe the nervous system. However, the breathing shown here is measured while we are sleeping. Respiratory rate during sleep periods is influenced by acute illness, health, dreams, nutrients, intoxicating substances, and how we feel.
